Online Keno Games

Online keno games are available from all the major casino software developers. Much like the lottery, the goal of keno is to select one or more numbers which are then chosen at random. Twenty numbers are then drawn by the casino, and players win money based on how many of their numbers were selected.

Online keno (and traditional keno) is an exciting game of chance, but it offers the worst odds at the casino. While the typical house edge for non-slot machine games is between 0% and 5%, keno usually ranges between 4% and 66%. Most serious gamblers stay away from keno, but it remains popular with the casual player due to the possibility of quickly winning large sums of money.

History of Keno Games

The history of keno dates back over 2,000 years to the Han Dynasty in China (between 205 and 187 B.C.). The game was later introduced to the United States by Chinese immigrants in the 19th century.

According to legend, the invention of keno once helped raise enough money to save an ancient city during times of war. It is also said that the Great Wall of China was partially built with proceeds from the game. In those days, results from a keno drawing would be sent to outlying villages and provinces by carrier pigeon.

Online Keno Paytables

Casinos that offer keno each have their own paytable. Normally, players are paid based on how many of their numbers are drawn by the house, but this is also influenced by the size of the wager and the individual paytable. Because the keno paytables differ from casino to casino, this causes the house edge for keno to fluctuate wildly.

Specialty bets are also popular in keno, and this only adds to the variations in paytables. In fact, land-based casinos in Las Vegas and Reno offer as many as 20 or 30 keno paytables for their customers.

Most casinos allow players to wager on anywhere from 1 to 20 numbers, but others many place a cap at 10, 12 or 15 numbers. It’s even possible to wager that none of the numbers you selected will be drawn. In this case, the payout depends on how many numbers are initially selected.

Online Keno Odds

While it’s thrilling to play online keno games, the odds are somewhat daunting. For example, it is estimated that if every person on the planet today played a game of keno each second of their entire lives, there would only end up being one 20-number keno winner. The odds of getting all 20 numbers on a keno ticket are 1 in 3.5 quintillion (1 in 3,535,316,142,212,180,000).

Here are some additional keno odds:

How to Play Online Keno Games

The first thing to do when playing keno is to buy a ticket. The keno ticket will have numbered boxes from 1 to 80. The player then selects their numbers by making an “X” on the appropriate digits (or clicking them at an online casino). The casino will then draw 20 balls and look for matches on the player’s ticket. In online keno games, this is done using a random number generator to ensure a fair drawing each time.

Players can also purchase a multi-race keno ticket, which locks in their selections for up to 1,000 drawings. When all the drawings are complete, the player may then collect any winnings that he or she has coming.

In online keno games, the winning numbers will be displayed right on your computer screen. At land-based casinos, the winning numbers will be broadcast on monitors throughout the casino and even on the Internet.

Online keno winnings will be deposited right into your account, while methods vary in land-based casinos. In the past, a player was required to redeem their winning ticket prior to the next drawing (usually every five or six minutes). Now, a late pay window usually allows players to redeem winning tickets up to a year after the drawing. This varies at each casino, so be sure and familiarize yourself with the rules where you’re playing.

Besides just selecting a series of numbers, keno players also have a number of special bets available. Combination Keno, for example, allows the player to select a group of numbers and select specific combinations which create “ways.”

For example, let’s say the player selects 7, 6, 12 and 31. The player might select 7 and 12 as a way, plus 6 and 31 (as well as the original 4-number combination). If the numbers 6 and 31 were drawn by the casino, the player would win for the 4-number combination (7, 6, 12, 31) and the 2-number combination of 6 and 31.

There’s also the Top/Bottom Paytable, which allows the player to bet on whether more balls will be drawn from numbers 1 to 40 or 41 to 80. Other options include Odd/Even, Left/Right, Top Only, Bottom Only, Left Only, Right Only, Odd Only, Even Only, Edge, Square, eXtra Million and Exacta.
