Even More About Cheating at Absolute Poker

Lots of articles online about the cheating situation at Absolute Poker now, but I'll link to just a couple of the mainstream news sites after I summarize what I understand about the situation here.

Seems that Absolute Poker has now admitted that there has been a serious breach of their security systems, and they're going to attempt to make things right with player refunds to affected players. The unfortunate thing I see in this situation is that when these suspicions were initially voiced by the poker players at online forums like 2+2, Absolute Poker stonewalled and denied everything. Anyway, I don't think this necessarily means that all online poker is rigged. (Certainly not at the levels at which I play, anyway.)

But apparently the cheating was the work of one of the computer geek types who wanted to prove to the CEO that their security wasn't as great as they though. Sorta like the villain in that last Die Hard movie.

For more, read the articles at:

Anyone who feels like Absolute Poker should be avoided after this should keep in mind that Ultimate Bet is owned by the same company. (I'm not advocating leaving either poker room, btw. If you like playing there and feel secure, by all means continue to play there.) I just noticed that a lot of people don't necessarily realize that both poker sites are owned by the same company.

More About Cheating at Absolute Poker

The fuss and fury over the alleged cheating at Absolute Poker is still going on. Now there are claims that the Absolute Poker help staff actually sent a player a spreadsheet with all of the players' hole cards and hand history for a tournament, and based on the hand history, cheating seems like it almost surely took place.

Honestly, the whole situation is such a headache that I'm not even following it that closely. Although it seems to me that it's possible someone faked a spreadsheet. I don't know, and I'm not taking sides. I don't play at Absolute Poker or Ultimate Bet anymore anyway. (No cause and effect relationship there. I play at Full Tilt Poker and PokerStars only nowadays.)

Absolute Poker Rigged Allegations

Absolute PokerMultiple reports of Absolute Poker having some kind of problem with a player being able to see other players' hole cards have been appearing across the Internet. The most involved discussion of this has happened at the 2+2 Forums, which is possibly the largest poker forum on the Internet. (It's a site that's full of serious poker players too.)

Poker King has some interesting commentary about what's going with this situation, mostly focused on Absolute Poker's lack of a coherent and aggressive public response to these allegations.

And Steven Levitt, author of Freakonomics, has also posted about the situation on his blog.

We're not expressing an opinion about the allegations ourselves, but it's definitely something worth reading more about.

Barney Frank Online Gambling Bill Stalls

Barney FrankIn an interview with e-Review Journal, Congressman Barney Frank indicated that his bill to overturn UIGEA has stalled for lack of support. (Frank's legislation is called the Internet Gambling Regulation and Enforcement Act, or IGREA.) According to the article, no further action is planned this year regarding the legislation.

The article went on to hint that pressure from the World Trade Organization and the European Union might help get things moving again. The USA might be required to pay between $1 and $3 billion to the island nation of Antigua for violating the terms of their membership in the WTO as it relates to online casino gambling.

Barney Frank has 36 political co-sponsors for his IGREA legislation. That's not enough to force anything to happen right away.
